Story: Origins Of New Mexico Families

Jose de Atienza de Alcalay Escobar was a native of Villa Berguera in the Archbishopric of Toledo, and boasted at a son's wedding that he was a member of the Third Order of St Dominic.  He and his wife Gertrudis Sevillano de Mancilla came with the Velasco colonists of 1693, with two adult sons, Juan and Hose, and two minor ones, Manuel, fifteen, and Joaquin, thirteeen.  In 1698, old Jose signed his full name again during another marriage deposition, again memtioned his Dominican affiliation, and gave his age as 49.  He gave his age as 64 in 1713.  In 1716 he was granted permission to return to New Spain, and it seems as though the family did leave, except Jose II and his family, and Joaquin, who seems to have died before that time.

   To The End of the Earth - A History of the Crypto-Jews of New Mexico         Author: Stanley M. Hordes   Paragraph   <div>  </div> Jose de Atienza Alcala y Escobar, who was the progenitor of the Atencio family, another of the colonists who arrived in 1693, can also be traced to possible Jewish roots in the region of Guadalajara, northeast of Madrid.  Atienza’s father and grandfather were from the town of Brihuega, located about eighteen miles northeast of Guadalajara. Sacramental records for Brihuega were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, rendering it impossible to trace the family history beyond Jose’s grandparents: Cristobal de Atienza, Maria San Baptista,  Francisco de Alcala and Maria de Escobar.  A search of the records of the Inquisition tribunal of Cuenca, to which the region was subject, however, turned up several Atienza convicted of the secret practice of Judaism.  Two of them were from the neighboring town of Cifuentes: Alonso Sanchez de Atienza, son of Rui Sanchez de Atienza, who confessed his heresy on July 19. 1492 and Juan de Atienza, sentenced to be burned at the stake in 1494.  And from Brihuega was Pedro de Alcala, a weaver, the son of Pedro de Alcala, whose brother Juan de Alcala, was convicted of judaizante in 1558.
