• Story: Mathew Gooch

Matthew Gooch of Alvingham, 1st son and heir, aet. 28 at his father's death "about" 7 Feb. 1593-4. When the American Colonists were settling the new world in the early seventeenth century, there lived in Lincolnshire, England one Matthew Gooch. He was the father of 8 sons and 5 daughters. In those days the name was spelled in many ways - Goch, Goche, Gouge, Gough, Googe, and Gooch. The two most usual ways were Gough and Gooch. Mathew Gough (Gooch) was the eldest son of Barnabe Gooch I and Mary Darrell, but there is no special interest attached to his life and character. Two researchers of the Gooch Family have left information that the father of our Henry Gooch in the colony of Virginia was a Matthew Gooch. A Miss. Frances K. Gooch, born in Kentucky, and a faculty member of Agness Scott College in Georgia at the time of her retirement, (now deceased) said that a Matthew Gooch, father of Henry Gooch to Virginia, was "of Lincolinshire, Norfolk, England". Miss Gooch was a thorough researcher. Unfortunately her notes and proof were destroyed after her death. Some information survived in the form of letters to others in the Gooch family. The other researcher, Mr. William Humphreys, a freshman at Yale University in 1958/9, found primary evidence on the Gooch family in the extensive holdings of the Yale University Library. He researched a term paper for a freshman history class, on the Gooch Family, as his mother was a Gooch from the early family in Virginia. The English background has been taken from his manuscripts. After the death of Mathew Gooch (abt 1624) his younger sons, Robert,Thomas, John, Matthew, William, Jeffery, and Henry vanished from Alvingham. Sixteen years later in Virginia are found the names Mathew, William, Jeffery, Henry, and John in New England. After the death of Barnabe Gooch II in 1626, following that of his brother Matthew, and the transfer of the Alvingham estate to Barnabe Gooch and his wife Pascha, the younger sons of Matthew - viz. Robert, Thomas, John, William, Matthew, Jeffery, and Henry, vanished from Alvingham. Sixteen years later there is found in Virginia a Matthew Gooch, a William Gooch, a Jeffery Gooch, and a few years later Henry Gooch, and in New England, a John Gooch."

John Gooch, was at York as early as 1640, when his wife, Ruth, was summarily dealt with by the Court for her improper relations with the Rev. George Burdett of unsavory memory (1 Maine Historical Society's Collections, edition of 1865, i. 365, 366); was a freeman, 1652; removed to Wells, where he was a Selectman in 1653 (Massachusetts Colony Records, iii. 334) ; and died early in 1667. Bourne says that he first settled at Newbury (History of Wells and Kennebunk, Maine, p. 78. Cf. Massachusetts Colony Records, i. 266). His will, dated 7 May and proved 12 July, 1667, mentions wife Ruth, sons John and James, and several grandchildren, and bequeaths to his son James a house, garden, and orchard in Slimbridge, in the hundred of Berkeley (the birthplace of Dr. Edward Jenner), Gloucestershire, England, which he had bought of William Hammond (Maine Wills, pp. 32, 33); from which it is inferred that the emigrant came hither from Slimbridge.
