Ana, with a muneco (a cord or sash) tied around her waist to keep the fetus in place, was going to have her fifth child.&nbsp; The conduct of her pregnancy was typical of the practice of the day.&nbsp; She had carried on with her household work &amp; received no special favors, &amp;, in fact, the pregnancy had been neither acknowledged nor discussed, for to do so would have been to invite bad luck.</font></strong></p><p><strong><font size="4">However, in the final days of her &#39;condition&#39;, she was advised by the women of the village to restrict her intake of water lest the infant&#39;s head become too large for easy delivery &amp; she was coaxed by her servant to observing additional dietary restrictions.&nbsp; Great precautions were taken to assure her emotional stability &amp; protect her from fright.&nbsp; Nine days before the expected birth of the baby a novena to San Ramon Nonato was started.</font></strong></p><p><strong><font size="4">At delivery, Ana was assisted by a partera (midwife), her servant, &amp; the three girls (her daughters).&nbsp; A son, Antonio, was required to keep his distance &amp; saw very little of his mother during the eight days postpartum where she was required to stay in bed.&nbsp; Finally, although his mother was required to remain indoors for an additional month &amp; to eat only the meat of male animals, Antonio was allowed to see her &amp; his new brother, Alonso.&nbsp; They were to become thick &amp; fast friends throughout their lives until separated later by tragedy.&quot;</font></strong></p>
