  • Story: Dorothy Dravis Garrett, 69

    <span></span><span>Former Anchorage resident Dorothy Mae Dravis Garrett, 69, died Oct. 16, 2003, at home in Urbandale, Iowa, with her husband of 45 years and their children at her side. </span><span><p>Memorial services will take place at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Central Lutheran Church in Anchorage. </p><p>Ms. Garrett was born July 14, 1934, in Postville, Iowa, and was raised in Waterloo, Iowa. She majored in music education and graduated from Grinnell College. She married Robert &quot;Bob&quot; Garrett in August 1958. The couple moved to Indiana, where their three children were born. </p><p>In 1966, Mr. Garrett&#39;s work in air traffic control brought the family to Anchorage. Ms. Garrett pursued her passion for music while raising the family, teaching piano and singing in the community chorus. She was music and choir director at Central Lutheran Church for 20 years. She also was organist, soloist, accompanist and director of several choirs. She founded the city&#39;s annual presentation of &quot;The Messiah.&quot; </p><p>In 1975, Ms. Garrett returned to teaching full-time. She received a master&#39;s degree in elementary education in 1976 from the University of Alaska Anchorage and her education-administration certificate in 1985. She retired from the Anchorage School District in 1994. </p><p>During retirement, Ms. Garrett served as a legislative aide for two terms in Juneau. She was an active member of the Alaska State Democrats, Northeast Community Council and the Cancer Fund, and volunteered as a court appointed special advocate for children in crisis. In 1997-98, the University of Alaska Alumni Association honored her with their annual Community Service Award. </p><p>In November 2002, she and her husband moved to Iowa. </p><p>Ms. Garrett is survived by her husband, Bob; their three children and their spouses, Tom and Trish Garrett of Arizona, Anne Garrett of Washington state, and Dan Garrett and Kristi Eckard of Iowa; seven grandchildren, Jonathan, Megan, Sebastian, Emily, Kieran, Gabriel and Harrison; and many other family members and friends. </p><p>Her family wrote: &quot;She fought her cancer with great grace and dignity. She did not let it defeat her and should be remembered for the passion and joy with which she lived her whole life.&quot; </p><p>In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Susan B.
