Henry was born July 11, 1857 in Nurenberg, Red Witz, Germany. As a boy, he and his brother, Peter, who was two years older, worked in a grape vineyard running barefoot and delivering the wine after it was made.

As they got older, they decided to come to America to get away from military training. His mother had passed away when he was nine years old.

He said that a farmer man who was a Catholic priest, by the name, Mason, wanted to get married. So he left the Catholic belief and changed his name to Harthen which is where our Harthan name came from.

Henry spent his 16th birthday on the ocean. They landed in New York City and were met by their father who had come over before them. The three of them sang on stage in New York City for a while.

Then the boys, Peter and Henry, decided to come west. They couldn't speak English, so Henry started to school here. He said he went through three readers in one winter, learning fast.

Henry Sr. and one sister were already in New York. Their mother died when the boys were young. One sister remained in Germany and married a Rosenbaur. The other sister married a Beilfeld.
