Story from Holger Poths 5th cousin from Germany(trip 2002) Jacob father had lost the Mill his father gave him because he could not pay his other brothers and sisters their share.Court records indicate he was forced to sell because of debt not paid.The census records indcate that one year he was a Mill owner than a laborer the follwing year.He also stated that the Poths family were the Mayor of the town that past from father to son,however at the time Jacob left there was political movement to change.Inthe spring of 1849 there was political and economic problems including the House of Nassau was having political problems since there was no male heir and the alliance with their cousin in England was being questioned with Nassau alliance Prussia. Jacob father had served in the Nassau regiment that fought against Napolian who was an ally with England. In any event Jacob and his older sister Phillippina had recieved permission from the Duchess of Nassau to leave to go the America. Supposedly other member of the Poths family had left Probably heard stories of oportunities from the Hessian soliders that returned from America serving with the English allies during the Revolutionary War of the America's. Jacob and Phillipiina Probably took coach and river boat on the Rhine up to Rottenberg and boarded the Nederwaard.It's last Voyage ,the family story is he had met his wife Phillippina Pfeiffer on board ,was married by the Captain Meijer,that the ship was wreaked but all were saved. In new York Jacob was a wine Dealer as was Fredrick Poths (relative?)left for Michigan or Wisconsin.Bears broken into the Cabin they left Their first born was born either in Joliet or Rockford (Marie/Mary) then settled in Chicago were Karolina/Caroline was born.Jacob became a saloon keeper and owned a Boarding House on Wells and Jackson. In 1870 the chicago Fire burnt all they had ,but they escaped with a pet goatand a bag of laundry. After Jacob sold his land to Marshall Fields for 300 dollars and biult a new place on 552 Canal .Later Caroline met and Married a Boarder named Carmelich who later changed his name to James Williams.They had 13 children.
