Howard attended Lincoln High School but he quit during 12th grade as times were hard and he felt that he needed to start to work. At the time that he quit school, the principal came and talked to his parents to try to tell Howard that he should not quit school, that he was very bright and and should go on to college. But the Army soon called & changed those plans also. He went to work at Lincoln Steel Company as a crane operator for a short time after he quit school. When he was 18 he was then drafted into Military Service. He was in the Combat Engineers in the Army. They built bridges, etc. besides fighting. He went through the main part of the war. There group leaders kept getting killed so Howard was made the leader. He said that he sure didn't know how he was so lucky not to be killed. After returning home from the war he went to work at Goodyear in Lincoln, Nebraska. He worked there until his retirement in about 1986. Howard was a foreman in the preparation area and had seven supervisors under him and one hundred people working in that area.

Obituary from The Lincoln Journal Star Newspaper, Thurs.
