• Story: ALICE'S STORY

My name is Alice Davies (nee Doble), I was born on 21st November 1900 at 27 Orchard Street, Newport. We eventually moved to Lord Street and stayed in the Barnardstown area most of my young life with my parents and my 2 brother's and 4 sister's.

When I was about 16 years old (during the First World War) I worked for some time in the Ammunitions factory at Maesglas. After the war I went to Lovell's Toffee Rex factory in Albany Street, Crindau, Newport where I met my husband John who also worked there. My husband also served with the Royal Marines from 1914 to 1920. We used to go to many football matches as John used to play for Lovell's football team and collected quite a few medals.

We were married on 17th April 1922, my eldest son Bill was born in March 1923 and my second son John was born in March 1924, the in November 1929 my only daughter Beryl was born. We lived in Agincourt Street, Crindau all our married life and my 3 children all attended Crindau School.

In 1942 I started work in the restaurant of Marks and Spencer, Newport which nowadays they no longer have. I was there some time but left when my 2 sons came out of the Royal Air Force and Army at the end of the war.

My only hobby at this time was embroidery and I made quite a few table cloths, chair backs and tray cloths which my daughter still keeps.

My husband retired from the Wales Gas Board during 1961 and we spent 6 years together before he passed away in 1967.

I then lived on my own for quite a long time and enjoyed keeping the garden tidy as John was proud of his garden and greenhouse and won several prizes and cups at the Wales Gas Board Allotment shows during his retirement.

My sister Nell and I used to belong to Sisterhood at a church in St Julians, also Victoria Avenue and we used to go on day trips and also holidays at Minehead, Somertse which we enjoyed a great deal.

I had quite a few holidays with my son Bill and his family over the years. Also my daughter Beryl and her family have been close to me and taken care of me until I had to eventually go to Hillside Residential Home before going to Ty Craig Nursing Home, Malpas.
