<br>Manitoulin Expositor - April 17, 1941 on Microfilm and type d by Fay Martin<br>Pioneer Dies When Farm House Burns on Barrie Island<br>Mrs. Margaret Phalen, a pioneer woman of the Manitoulin, di ed Tuesday inh er 81st years from burns sustained in a fire . Her daughter, Harriet is in the hospital recovering fro m burns suffered early Monday morning when their two-store y farm home was completely destroyed by fire. Tom Phalen , a son, was also partially burned and received first aid t reatment.<br>The fire is believed to have been caused by an over-heate d kitchen stove. Getting a good hold in the kitchen, the bl aze spread throughout the house before the occupants were a wakened at approximately 1 o'clock Monday Morning. Mrs. Pha len was rescued from the burning inferno, but she receive d severe burns, and was taking treatments at the Mindemoy a Red Cross Hospital where she died Tueday.<br>Harriet was burned, but she also suffered extensive injurie s when she jumped from a second-storey window in order to e scape the flames. It was not known just how seriously the g irl had hurt herself when making the long jump to the groun d, but she is expected to be detained in hospital for som e time.<br> The Phalen home, one of the finest on Barrie Island, was b uilt four years ago. Because the fire had made good headwa y before it was noticed, the two-storey building was comple tely gutted.
