Michael & Mary Ann's daughter Rosie (Elliott) Boylen recorded in 1973 that Mary's parents (Darby & Catherine (Dunn) Mulrooney) gave the couple 40 acres of land near Mt. Hope, WI. Mike built a lovely log cabin on it. They had two big rooms upstairs and three downstairs: a bedroom, kitchen and pantry. The boys slept upstairs in one room whie the girls slept in the other room pstairs. Late the added a barn and hog house. A corn crib and chicken house followed, then another log barn. They had six to eight cows and foru or five horses. She records that Mary Ann's youngest brother was given 80 acres of land but liked to stay and eat with his sister's lively family.

Rosie continues that each of the children had to carry two pails to collect water which was 1.5 miles away. They drove the horses and cows one mile to a spring on their neighbor's farm. They sold Mary Ann's butter and eggs in Mt. Hope...Taxes in 1902 were $2.85. They had six or eight cows, some horses, pigs and sheep at the time.

Rosie records that her father was a hard working man. "He used to work in the woods in his spare time. He made log ties for the other neighbors and got $1.10 per day...One could buy a cow for $25.00 - $30.00.

Michael's death certificate says he was born in 1863 but both the Elliotts and the obituary use 1854.

Michael died of heart failure, double pneumonia.

Mary Ann died in her sleep at age 47 of mitral stenosis on October 24, 1917.

- source: "The Mulrooneys of Grant County, Wisconsin
