He was born in the Bronx in 1924, the loving son of David and Ethel Haimowitz. His brother, Leonard and his sister, Betty welcomed him into the family with open arms.In July of 1942, at age 17, Herbert thought it to be his duty to his country to enlist in the Naval Military Service. After his training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, he was assigned to the Navy Carrier "USS Wasp CV-18" as a Pharmacist Mate, 2nd Class. When the Wasp was bombed by a Japanese plane, Herbert came through and put his new skills to the test. For his unselfish efforts, he was awarded a citation by his commanding officer. Herbert stayed in the military until October of 1945. During that last year of service, he asked his high school sweetheart, Susan Sedacca, for her hand in marriage. They have been married for over 63 years.Herbert spent the rest of his days in the food service equipment supply industry. His goal was to make sure that the government had the best equipment and supplies to feed the troops all over the world. He continued his love for the ship, by always wearing his USS Wasp hat, seeing the ship through its decommissioning in 1972, and he was honored to become a plankowner.Herbert was laid to rest with a Naval Honor Guard at his service, Monday, January 19, 2009 at South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth Florida.
