<p>Here is the wife of Henry Cromwell Johnston as a child: the Emily mentioned in this drawing?&nbsp;</p> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div> <div align="center"><strong>The Lempri&egrave;re Family 1847 by Millais</strong></div> <div align="center"><br><em>The Lempri&egrave;re Family 1847 by Millais</em></div> <span style="font-family: arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;"><span style="font-family: arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;"><br></span></span> <div align="justify">Edward Platt explains in his article: - <blockquote>"It's a portrayal of the Lempri&egrave;re family on Twelfth Night, when it gathered to cut the cake traditionally served to mark the end of Christmas. Its members are depicted from the front, but Millais has placed himself on a chair to the left, where he sits drawing on a pad balanced on his knee. <strong>The second or third youngest child, Emily, is the only person who acknowledges his presence </strong>- the others are concentrating on the elaborately crested cake on the table, but she is glancing sideways in an unconscious betrayal of the artist's position. Millais seems to be looking at the figure of Fanny Lempri&egrave;re, the ringletted young woman standing next to him, who he was courting. The head of the family, Captain William Charles Lempri&egrave;re, stands at the back of the group, while his wife is sitting on the right, absorbed in her knitting - her studious detachment a counterbalance to the sketching artist."</blockquote> <blockquote>From:&nbsp;<span style="color: #1155cc;">http://www.epsomandewellhistoryexplorer.org.uk/LempriereWC.html</span></blockquote> <blockquote><span style="color: #1155cc;">&nbsp;</span></blockquote> </div> <span style="font-family: arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;"><span style="color: #1155cc;"><br></span><em>Drawing of Harry Reid, Arthur Reid and Emily Lempri&egrave;re by Millais<br>Three of the 13 children of Captain William Charles Lempri&egrave;re RHA and his wife Harriet (nee Reid)</em></span> <div> <div><span style="font-size: small;">&nbsp;</span></div> <div><span style="font-size: small;">&nbsp;</span></div> <div>Have a read of all this info about the Lemprieres and Jersey, one of the Channel Islands.&nbsp;<span style="color: #1155cc;">http://www.epsomandewellhistoryexplorer.org.uk/LempriereWC.html</span></div> <div><span style="color: #1155cc;">&nbsp;</span></div> <div>Don't forget that Wm Johnston (Dick's great grandfather married Clarissa Jacyntha Cater, who was born on Jersey in 1832, the daughter of a Royal Navy Officer.&nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>I am wondering if perhaps the Lemprieres and Caters knew one another and if perhaps it was Wm Johnston Dick's great grandfather who was a best man for Henry Cromwell JOhnston in 1876...Wm had married Clarissa J Cater in 1867 or thereabouts.&nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Dick's granddad Whizzbang aka George Chalmers JOhnston was born in London in 1874, two years before the wedding of Henry C johnston and Emily Lampriere.&nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>If the Wm Johnston who was a witness at the wedding of Henry Cromwell Johnston &amp; Emily Lempriere, then maybe that's why Dick's grandfather Whizzband (George Chalmers Johnston) was greeted so warmly by the Banker Pat Johnstons (i.e. Clifford) when the DSO announcement was made in 1918????</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Further on in this article:&nbsp;<span style="color: #1155cc;">http://www.epsomandewellhistoryexplorer.org.uk/LempriereWC.html</span>, the gravestone of Emily and her being the widow of Henry Cromwell Johnston is mentioned.
