Francisco Gregorio

I've decided to do a report on my great-grandfather, Francisco Gregorio.

At the age of 15, he ran away from home and a family of 21 brothers and sisters. He lived on the Azores Island of Portugal, during this time, in the year of 1870. And, it took him four years to reach his destiny, that of California.

He traveled mostly on cargo ships passing through, and made stops at Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Chile, Lima, Mexico, and the Hawaiian Islands. All this time trying to reach California.

Then he was on a ship heading for the Arctic, and ran into an iceburg. Stranded with him were 16 other men. They lived off of penquin eggs and raw seals, and at one time were forced to cannabalism. At the time of their rescue only nine men survived.

There was still another trip back to Hawaii and up to the Aleutian Islands, before finally reaching the land of California.

In the year of 1880, after he was settled in California, he traveled back to Portugal and married his long time sweetheart, Maria Conception Jermias. Bringing her home to California with him.
