Two of the sons of Joseph Gedling attended Chadwick Memorial Industrial School for Catholic Boys at Moorside, Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This school was established at Stanwix, Cumberland and replaced at Coxlodge, Gosforth. The school was re-certified at Stanwix on 8th December, 1905 for 200 boys and closed in 1924 on formation of the Lancaster Roman Catholic Diocese. The premises were a former convent. The children were working scholars ther in 1901, working in the Shoemaker's Department. John was aged 13 and Joseph 11 years of age.
