Hannah married an older widower with "4 small children" when she was 19 or 20 years old. She did this at her brothers' encouragement as her father, Rev. John was on wife number 3 and more babies on the way. She then had 4 children with him before he died in Wisconsin about 1865. She then married John Thomas Nicholson who was many years her junior. She was reported to be very dark haired and skin and very pretty still at that age. She and John had just one son, Howard Lacy Nicholson. She asked her husband, John, to leave her farm when Howard was only a toddler. Howard only saw his father once or twice after that. Hannah moved her family back to Kansas and eventually on to Oklahoma. Howard went by the name of his older half siblings (Wilcox) as it was easier than explaining a name difference. Eventually Hannah divorced John (I haven't looked yet but have heard the record is available in Kansas where she was living). From my research, it appears that John married Mary McKinney before obtaining a divorce from Hannah.

Hannah Alter was my husband's 2nd great grandmother. She features early on in a book written by her granddaughter Lorena Wilcox called "My Oklahoma Childhood".
