  • Story: Part Of My Indian Heritage

Loretta Bingham<br>!From James Henry: Marguerite Swiney was a full blooded Cherokee Indian who lived in Wilkes Co., N. C. She is listed as Minerva Swiney in her marriage record in NC and as Margaret in Tennessee and Missouri Census records, but her Daughter-in-law thought her name was Marguerite. She is not on any of the Indian Rolls as she was married to a White Man when these were taken. However the Cherokees helped her son when he was in trouble after the 1873 Locust disaster in Kansas by giving him a place to live and finding him a job cutting wood in Chocktaw territory. Her Grandson, George Elmer Mikel, refused to get on the Indian rolls in 1930 (when invited by friends who were Indians and knew about his Indian heritage.<br><br>!This spouse is listed on sheet from Margaret Mobley. I had no earlier<br>information about her.<br><br>~Temple work done as Marguerette M. b. Cal 1814,,North Carolina might be her.6 7 8
