Two first cousins got together and had Hazen. He was brought up by his grand-father. His mother, Mary, went on to marry another first cousin (guess she only knew her cousins - everything was horse and carriage in those days) and she had a very large, good looking family.

Hazen was very religious and wanted to become a missionary. He ended up marrying a lovely lady Ella May. She also was very religious. They never had children, and she died suddenly in her 30's after a tea party - they think she had diabetes. Hazen then married Frances Taylor years later and they had Lloyd and Marjorie as their children. Hazen had a heart attack in his early 50's while he and Lloyd were sitting on the porch. Lloyd was only about 15 years old.

Hazen ran the grocery store in Hampton and also put up horses (this is where Lloyd learned to be so good around horses). In those days they would travel by horse and buggy to Hampton, stay over night, so the horses needed a place to stay, as well as the people - they would load up on supplies and then take another day to get back to their home in the country. I know that Hazen was a very honest and good man and helped many people get through the Depression years as he would allow them to run a tab even though they couldn't pay him for the food. Dad used to tell us tales of the Indians that would come into the store. Some Indians gave Hazen pearls for food and he had a ring made for his daughter Marjorie, and a stick pin for Lloyd.
