  • Story: Origins Of Falstein

<div>The name Falstein is, of course, Yiddish, and probably means falling rock, or rockslide. &nbsp; The name most likely dates from late in the reign of Tsar Alexander I (d. 1825), following his decree that all subjects of his empire must have proper family names. &nbsp;(Before that time, most Russian Jews used only given names and patronymics, e.g., &quot;Falick ben Yitzkhok,&quot; or &quot;Falick Itzkovitz.&quot;) Our common ancestor may have lived near a rockslide and have taken or been assigned the name Falstein to distinguish him from other individuals with the same given name, though other explanations are possible.</div><div><br></div><div>Our ancestral shtetl, Nemirov (Russians and Ukranians pronounce it &quot;neh-MEER-ov&quot;), is about 135 miles southwest of Kiev. &nbsp; Not long ago I met a couple from there who informed me that the town had a population of about 10,000. &nbsp; They knew of no one with the name of Falstein. &nbsp; It is probable that most of the Jews living in the town in 1941 perished in the Holocaust, and that any Jewish population there now was resettled there after the war. &nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Did Falick Falstein have a son or brother whose identity is lost to us? &nbsp; There is a large tribe of Falsteins in Australia whose relationship to us is unknown. &nbsp;I once knew a man from Argentina who had gone to school in Buenos Aires with a Carlos Falstein. And then there is the concierge at the grandest hotel in the Grand Duchy of Liechtenstein, who calls himself the Baron von Falstein. &nbsp; On the other hand, there must have been other rockslides in other Jewish towns, and the name may not be exclusive to our family. &nbsp;(MF)</div>
