The village of Great Cubley is on an old Roman Road, with Rocester just across the other side of the River Dove which defines the county boundaries between Staffordshire to the west and Derbyshire to the east, except for a small area near Rocester to the east of the river, which belonged to the ancient county of Derbyshire.

Just to the south of Great Cubley is a moat next to a church, part of Foston Brook.

The village of Little Cubley is a little further south.

The village of Marston Montgomery is about 3km west of Great Cubley.

Several old halls are nearby, Stydd Hall, Bentley Hall with the strangely named "hunger Bentley Village" abandonned, just to the north of it; Snelston is on the Derbyshire side of the River Dove, with Snelston Hall.

Calwich Abbey is on the west bank of the Dove closer to Ellastone village, in Staffordshire.
