Her father died in 1196, leaving her as his heir, and Richard I married her off in the same year to William (I) Longespée (d. 1226), his illegitimate brother, who became by right of his wife earl of Salisbury. He and Ela had four sons and four daughters; two of the younger sons had notable careers: Stephen became seneschal of Gascony and justiciar of Ireland, and Nicholas Longespée, bishop of Salisbury. Little is known of Ela's married life. In 1220 she and her husband laid the fifth and fourth foundation stones respectively for the new cathedral at Salisbury, and she was described in the Register of St Osmund as ‘a woman indeed worthy of praise because she was filled with the fear of the Lord’. On the rumour in 1225 that her husband had been drowned, Hubert de Burgh's nephew sought to marry her, but she refused to consider him.

William in fact died in Salisbury Castle on 7 March 1226, and was buried in the cathedral; Ela performed homage to the king for her inheritance twelve days later, but had to surrender Salisbury Castle. However, she acted as sheriff of Wiltshire in 1227–8 and between 1231 and 1237, and accounted in person at Michaelmas 1236; this was an office which had been held at various times by her husband, father, and grandfather, although a subsequent case in the king's court made it clear that she had no hereditary right to the shrievalty.

Ela's widowhood is noted for her benefactions to the church and her religious life. Her husband founded a charterhouse at Hatherop, Gloucestershire, in 1222, but the monks found the endowments inadequate and the site unsuitable. They appealed to Ela who settled them in her park at Hinton, Somerset, and augmented the endowments. Her own foundation was a house of Augustinian canonesses at Lacock, Wiltshire, established in 1230; Ela entered this house in 1237, and became its first abbess in 1239 when the nunnery was upgraded from a priory to an abbey.

Ela resigned her position as abbess twenty years later. She died on 24 August 1261, and was buried in the abbey. She outlived her eldest son and grandson; her eldest son, Sir William (II) Longespée, led the English crusaders on Louis IX's first crusade and died in 1250 at Mansourah in Egypt. According to Matthew Paris, Ela had a vision of her son before she received the news of his death. Her heir at her death was her great-granddaughter, Margaret Longespée, who married Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln.

Only daughter and heir, she was given by Richard I, with the Earldom of Salisbury, to his bastard brother, William Longespee. After his death in 1225/26, the Countess Ela did homage for her inheritance 19 Mar 1225/26, but on the 23rd she was required to surrender Salisbury Castle. The county of Wiltshire was committed to her 22 Jan 1226/27. She founded Lacock Abbey in 1229, and took the veil there in 1238.

http://www.geneajourney.com/fzpatrk.html#wmfzpat

(b) ELA ([1187] or [1191]-24 Aug 1261, bur Lacock Abbey). In 1196, she succeeded her father as suo jure 3rd Countess of Salisbury. There is a story that immediately following her father's death she was imprisoned in a castle in Normandy by one of her paternal uncles who wished to take her title and enormous wealth for himself. He then exchanged his pilgrim's dress for that of a Harper or travelling Troubadour, and in this disguise entered the Court in which the maid was detained. As he acted his part well he was kindly received and treated as one of the household. At last after two years of search his undertaking was fully accomplished and having found a convenient opportunity for returning to England brought the young heiress with him and presented her to King Richard..... The king chose to betroth her to his half-brother William Longespee, thereby solving two problems: keeping Ela's landed estates at close hand and providing one of his father's royal bastards with the means to an income. William was probably in his twenties and Ela a mere eight or nine years old when they were betrothed. This was not an unusual age gap at the time amongst the aristocracy where the marriage of daughters was useful for forging alliances. William and Ela would not have lived as man and wife until Ela was capable of bearing a child.

All agree that Ela was pious and a woman of strong character. While William, a skilled commander, was often away fighting for his half-brother the king. She and William each laid a foundation stone of the new Salisbury Cathedral. During one of William's long journeys abroad, when others feared he had been lost, Ela refused to marry any of the suitors who had their eye on her fortune and steadfastly believed in her vision of his return. She was proved correct.

On his death, William was the first to be buried in the new Salisbury Cathedral and his fine tomb, pictured left, stands in the nave. Ela founded two Augustinian religious houses in his memory, one for men at Hinton Charterhouse and the other for women at Lacock. It is said that she laid the foundation stones for both on the same day, 16 April 1232, requiring a journey of 16 miles.

She bore her husband eight children, four girls and four boys. Upon the demolition of the church her tombstone was moved to the centre of the Cloister Court, and from there in 1895 to it's present position in the cloister walk. It's inscription, which may date from the eighteenth century reads (latin translation):

Below lie buried the bones of the venerable Ela, who gave this sacred house as a home for the nuns.
