• Story: WARRANT FOR WINFIELD MOORE ALIAS WILLIAM M DAVIS

THIS WARRANT WAS ISSUED IN BURKE COUNTY GEORGIA FOR ARREST OF WINFIELD MOORE ALIAS WILLIAM M DAVIS OF DAVIS COMMUNITY (NOW THE FAWIL COMMUNITY) OF NEWTON COUNTY TEXAS.

99. On the 2d instant:

Winfield Moore murdered Claborn Forehand, in Burke County, Georgia on 8 January 1934. Moore is about 35 years old. 5ft. 9in. or 10 ins. tall tolerably slender built thin visage and fair hair. Issue 9 May 1834.

When the Newton County Sheriff received this he knew he had to go and serve it to William M Moore who was a good friend of his. William and Nancy( decrease at this time) were upstanding citizens of the Davis Community in which they name it and Davis Creek. When the sheriff arrived he showed the warrant for William's arrest. William invited him in for coffee while he would go to his room to get some things together. Some of Williams children were in the front room with Sheriff. Their daddy went to his bedroom wrote a short note and got his gun and ended his life. When they heard the shot everyone ran to back bedroom and found William M Moore on the floor died. In note he said the death of Claborn Forehand was an accident it all start by him helping his neighbors build a fireplace the Forehand started drinking and made a bad statement about one of ladies in Moore family. A fight broke out and Winfield threw Claborn up next to a tree and probably broke his neck. When this happen they all started hollering that they would see him hung for this. He got on his horse roded quickly to his plantation and told Nancy Belcher Moore his wife what happen. He got few things and his oldest son Pleasant Barclay Moore and left for Texas. Winfield told Nancy that he would call for her and other children later when things died down. Later Nancy the young children and several slaves headed out for Texas in a cover wagon with not to many things. She had a child along the way to died and they buried it somewhere along the way. When they got to Texas they had a good life for back then. They raised children, crops and livestock. Start the Davis Community school, church and help lots of neighbors when in need. When Nancy folks died she was left the plantation in Georgia she sent a friend of family one of the McFarland boys to go take care of the Burke estate for her. While he was in Georgia he let is slip that Winfield Moore AKA William M Davis was living in Newton County, Texas. Why he told I don't know. Nancy died during this time. So she never knew about the warrant or that their friend betraded them. In the note Winfield Moore AKA William M Davis said he couldn't go back and be hung for an accident that happen so many years ago. This was a blow to the community about his death. Both Nancy Blecher Moore-Davis and husband Winfield Moore aka William M. Moore were buried on hill behind the homestead. The graves were never marked with a headstone but everyone in family knew of a tree where they were buried. The DAR had a Early Pioneer Family memorial marker placed in the Davis Cemetery which is located accross the road from where the old homestead stood. Helen Davis Hamby ggggreat granddaughter
