In 2004, I met two "cousins" one a(LYNCH descendant) and one a (BARRETT descendant) on GENFORUM.com. Before I was introduced to Ancestry.com that was a FAVORITE/Wonderful site to "meet" people. They have both been researching their LYNCH and BARRETT ancestry which greatly fits in with mine. Sally's gr-gr-grandmother, Anna LYNCH was sister to my g-g-grandmother, Mary, wife of William Henry NEALON ! Helen was a gr-granddaughter to my Wm & Mary's daughter, Martha NEALON Barrett, daughter of their daughter, Marie BARRETT Broker ! WOW, what a thrill to find that your "cousins" are truly out there, we just have to be persistant.

In the County Clare information of William & Mary's marriage 14 February 1844. (NEILAN is the way they spelled NEALON in Co Clare) and that is the way it is spelled on the marriage of Wm & Mary (LYNCH) NEALON....apparently it was changed when they came to USA, whether by them or officials in immigration, and they kept it..???

On Marriage Records - It stated:

""William NEILAN of Kilmurray to Mary Lynch (Michael) of Carhufree married at her father's house in the presence of her father John NEILAN , and Matilda Purtill. ""(I take that to mean that MARY'S father was Michael and was in attendance, along with her mother, Matilda (Maggie) and John NEILAN)as witnesses.............(I am thinking John was possibly a brother to William as the death record for William-1902- states that his father was Patrick-- but definately NOT SURE of this)

I am told that it was customary at that time to be married in the bride's home instead of in church. Mary's parents were Michael LYNCH & Matilda (Maggie) PURTILL. (Purtill is a variant of Purcell).

They probably then went to Derrynalecka, to where William's family was, which was also customary. John NEILAN (father/brother?)was a farmer there, Parish of Kilmurry-McMahon, Co Clare. The birth of Wm & Mary's first daughter, Susan, abt 1845, does not show up in records as her birth would have been before the records started-1846-in that Parish. Their second child, Susan, is in the Parish Records, baptised, 17 Sept 1846, in Derrynalecka, Kilmurry-McMahon, Co. Clare. They came to USA soon after that.

I do not know when William changed it to NEALON or why. I have found it spelled various ways in the US Census since they came to USA in abt 1846-48.

In 2001, I met "cousin" Sally O'Meara on the Internet. She recognized me as a "cousin" because her gr-Aunt Marie (granddaughter of Anna LYNCH & Timothy Burns) had her mother's copy of the book of Poems "Silver Rifts" written by the son of my gr-gr-grand mother, Mary LYNCH NEALON; her huband and her son was named William Henry NEALON. Sally and my ancestors were sisters! Her family had said that WM H NEALON (jr) had died of tuberculosis-1899, 29 yrs(which we knew) and he was a Jesuit Priest...unknown)

Sally's daughter was living in Dublin, Ireland, an Irish history scholar in Medieval Irish history. They had this info on the NEALONS:

RE: irishsurnames.com; goireland.com: The name Neilan-Nealon in Ireland is derived from the native Gaelic Sept O'Niallain who were based in the Province of Connaught and in County Clare in particular. This name is seldom found with the O nowadays, usually spelt Neilan in Connac(ug)ht and Neylan in Co. Clare-the O'Neilans being the original owners of Ballyally Castle. It originated in Thomond (Co Clare): three of the name are listed as persons of importance in Co Clare in "Composition Book of Connacht" in 1585, though they are not described as chiefs. (Clare being West of the Shannon was included with Connacht for the purpose of that survey. 1659 they were very numerous in Co Clare and scarcely met elsewhere. They are still found chiefly in Connacht and Clare.

The O'Neilans -O Niallain in Irish- have not been prominent in Irish history: Only the tanist abbot of Clonmacnois (1093); John O'Neylan (according to the Clongowes Manuscript) a principal gentry in 1598; Nicholas O'Nelan, abbot of the Augustinian Order in Clare, diocese of Killaloe in (1613); Father Daniel O'Neilan, in the roll of martyrs for the Faith(d-1580); and father Denis O'Neillan was a distinguished general in the Austrian Imperial Army, became colonel in 1717.

It is thus essentially a Clare name even though it is now rather more numerous in the Connac(ug)gt counties to the North of it. The majority of descendants can still be found near the ancestral home. Our Nealons, Lynch, Burns, ancestors were all Catholic and were "Famine Immigrants". Most of Ireland was - and still is - except for Northern Ireland, which has been part of Great Britan since 1922. Co Clare (and the West of Ireland) was especially hard hit by the great Famine, as well as the "Evictions" that occured before it. The Irish had been oppressed for centuries by the Protestant-Anglican English (who ruled them until they fought and won their independance in the early 20th Century) and the "Penal Laws" were especially harsh against Catholics. It was in that political and cocio-economic climate that our ancestors immigrated (and it is easy to understand now why they did so).
