<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">John is now a free man and living in Victoria.<span> </span>Did he ever consider going back to his family in England?<span> </span>He couldn’t read and write at this stage, and we presume that Sarah couldn’t either, so it would have been difficult for them to correspond.</font></span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">In these times, a separation time of 7 years, was considered enough to end the marriage.<span> </span>John is now he considered `unmarried’ to Sarah (in UK), and at the age of 46 he marries Miss Ann Duggan (Duffan) aged 18 or 19 on 21October 1841 at Melbourne’s St James Church (C of E).<span> </span>This was also strange as Ann was Irish and definitely of RC religion.<span> </span>John Thomas Hopgood was born 8 January 1842 (baptised 5 December 1844).<span> </span>Ann was pregnant at the time of the wedding. I wonder if she knew that John had been a convict.</font></span></p><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">The age difference would create the family rift/mystery 12 years onwards</font></span></p><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Their children are born between 1842 and 1854.<span> </span>John Thomas 1842, Eliza December 1843 (both baptised 5 December 1844) George Henry 21 June 1846 (baptised 13 January 1847), Summerfield Michael 1849, Michael Joseph 1850 and then Mary 1854 (who died 9 days later).<span> </span>I wonder where the name `Summerfield’ came from – whose family – the Hopgoods or the Duggans ?</font></span></p><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 90pt; text-indent: -18pt; tab-ss: list 18.0pt 90.0pt"><span style="font-family: symbol"><span><font size="3">·</font><span style="font: 7pt 'times new roman'"> </span></span></span><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Samuel Summerfield was also a swing rioter – perhaps a friend of John’s from VDL</font></span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 90pt; text-indent: -18pt; tab-ss: list 18.0pt 90.0pt"><span style="font-family: symbol"><span><font size="3">·</font><span style="font: 7pt 'times new roman'"> </span></span></span><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Around the area in VDL where John was assigned is a creek named Summerfield Creek (maybe just a co-incidence)</font></span></p><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">The old Bacchus Marsh RC<span> </span>(25/01/1854) school records lists John, George, Elizabeth and Samuel Hopgood.<span> </span>I am presuming that John, George and Elizabeth (Eliza) are ours, and also that `Samuel’ is Summerfield.</font></span></p><strong><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span></strong> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman"><strong><span>John Hopgood snr is baptised in the RC church on 17 August 1849 the same day as his son Summerfield Michael. </span></strong><span>(Ann’s RC influence no doubt – she must have been a strong-willed lady) – although now John is 55 and will probably agree to almost anything for a `quiet’ life.<span> </span>His parents are listed as Thomas & Mary Hopgood, which is correct.<span> </span>I wonder why John agreed to be `re-christened’ in a RC church? </span></font></font></p><strong><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span></strong> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Did the death of Mary expedite the family split?<span> </span>From what I can gather – supported by documentation – John stayed on at Coimadai/Bacchus Marsh with the 2 oldest sons John Thomas and George Henry and the eldest daughter Eliza, while it seems that Ann left John, and took the 2 youngest sons, Summerfield Michael and Michael Joseph and moved up north to the town of Elmore in Victoria.</font></span></p><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">They (Ann and the 2 boys) changed their name to Pearce (sometimes Pearse).<span> </span>When I was reading the early Bacchus Marsh papers, I saw where the family called Pearce ran the local town carrier business.</font></span></p><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Did Ann come disheartened being:</font></span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">married to an older man</font></span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">did she find out that John had been a convict.</font></span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Did she find out that John had been married previously and had 2 children</font></span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Or maybe she just fancied a younger man, a man called Pearce</font></span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">and they moved away from Bacchus Marsh to start a new life.</font></span></p><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Now Ann’s life can only be guessed at by the `certificated’ documents.</font></span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 54pt; text-indent: -18pt; tab-ss: list 18.0pt 54.0pt"><span style="font-family: symbol"><span><font size="3">·</font><span style="font: 7pt 'times new roman'"> </span></span></span><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">She marries Charles Olive in 1875 and states that she is Ann Pearce and is a widow – former husband died in 1873 (did she mean that the chappy Pearce had died – cannot find any death record yet 1999)<span> </span>and that she has 5 living and 6 deceased children by former marriages. (Maybe she means that 5 of 6 are alive and the 6<sup>th</sup> one had died)<span> </span>While in fact, her first husband John Hopgood was still alive and kicking down in Bacchus Marsh.</font></span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 54pt; text-indent: -18pt; tab-ss: list 18.0pt 54.0pt"><span style="font-family: symbol"><span><font size="3">·</font><span style="font: 7pt 'times new roman'"> </span></span></span><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Did Ann `divorce’ John Hopgood, and marry a Pearce?<span> </span>To this date (1998) no record has been found of the Hopgood divorce or Pearce marriage.<span> </span>Michael Pearce (her son is a witness at her marriage to Charles Olive)</font></span></p><span><font face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font></span>
