• Story: MORE INFORMATION ON THE YOUNGEN FAMILY

The house at 113 Hill Avenue had a big unfinished room in the basement with shower head at one end and small sink and toilet at the other. I hear this was common to have such a large shower room for the men to clean up after butchering cattle and hogs. Since they did that quite a bit. The brothers would walk great distances to bring herds of cattle their dad bought back home on foot. Joe could look at a herd and tell right off how many head and value. Their mother Kate would clean the table after a meal and set it right away with the plates upside down to keep them dust free. There was food cooking most of the time and when buyers showed up they were fed no matter the hour. When they came home from church the pet goose would run to meet the wagon. They made homemade saurkraut in crocks on the back porch. Grandma had a great recipe for head cheese or Siltz. Grandma Lozetta attended St. Mary's Catholic Church and school as did her children and some of the grandkids. Her husband Ben Baish was a wonderful man but would not enter a Catholic church. Believe his family was Zion Lutheran. Although he was a suicide, Grandma got him buried in Mt. Olivet. I think the Baishes came in the early 1850s and the Youngens around 20 years later.
