My great grandmother Charlotte Roche must have died somewhere early or near 18 may 1863, she was about 34. I went for some gin in the morning; my mother took a little and left the rest, which father took at night. Father had gone away and came back; at that time he took gin. She hit him with the candlestick and he beat her with his hands. She cried out, the mark of her face was Father hit her one-day with the frying pan. After my father beat mother she was ill and lay down on the floor. I went to bed and slept and when father came home it was dark and he made my sister get the light, and mother was on the floor dead. Father said he was going for Dr Plews. When the police came, mother was the same way on the floor. I never heard my mother speak after father beat her. Mother got drunk sometimes. My father hit the blows with his hands on my mother’s belly. John Roache signed hid mark.

Margaret Roache. I am a little girl eleven years old, daughter of Peter Roache. I live at home with my father and mother. I know that God loves us to tell the truth, but I don't know what an oath is. I remember father coming home on Saturday night. My mother was in bed, my father was drunk - my mother was ill in bed but she was not drunk. She struck my father with a candlestick and he then struck her with his hands everywhere. Father took his tea, and went away. He came back and went to the Belle Vue. I did not see him come back. Mother went to bed before bedtime. She did not say that father had hurt her. I went to bed after the other children were in bed. I don't know when father came home. I went to bed in the kitchen. When father came home he called me and said mother was dead. I got up and saw her in bed; she was dead, and just in the same way as she sleeps in bed. She was not on the floor. My father said he was to go to Fryerstown. I went to my bed again and slept. I did not see father go away. I was up again before the constable came. My mother was on the floor then. When I saw mother on the floor I covered her up with blankets. My mother had some gin in the morning, but none in the evening. On Thursday Father hit my mother with a hot frying pan on the face for finding fault with him for being drunk - I have often seen father strike mother, and seen them both fight, but not when sober. My mother did not speak any more after father gave mother a beating. When father came back after he came home first, it was to get some money. He did not give my mother any money that night. Margaret Roache.

Peter Roache...... I am a labourer and live at Fryers Creek. The deceased is my wife aged 34 years. She is the mother of six children, the last she had a few months ago. She has not been well since and has been atteneded by Dr Blews about a month since. She was able to attend to her family duties. She has been drinking during the last week, ale gin, wine. About six o’clock on Saturday afternoon last I went home after work and found her in bed. She was the worse for drink. The children were there; the oldest is eleven years old.

I was cautioning her about her habits. We had a few words. She then threw the candlestick at me and I went out to the Belle Vue. When I came home which was about 11 p m I found her dead. I think I was drunk but I had my senses about me. She was dead between the two beds in the bedroom. She was on her side and the head against one of the beds. The children, four of them in the one bed in the same room. I left the candle burning but there was none burning when I returned. I lit the candle and saw her first. I awoke the children.............(need to get a copy of inquest)

Continues...When I got home I saw the children and lit the candle with matches which I got on the table. I got in the back door, it was only held by the latch. I had some steak, which the girl fried. The mark on her face was made last Thursday. I had a few words with her then. She was sitting at the fire and I was cooking the meat. I was angry at her for being drunk. She was at he washing the day after. On Wednesday last she fell against a post, she was drunk - I carried her to bed. She has not taken her food well for the last week. We were on good terms when she was sober and on bad when she was drunk. I have not given her occasion to be angry with my habits., When I went in and went to bed I touched something at my feet. I felt it was a body and lit the candle and saw who it was.. She had her clothes on. A few minutes to seven yesterday morning, Peter Roache informed me that his wife had died during the night. He said she had been drunk the previous evening and that he had left afet tea to go to the Belle Vue Hotel and returned in the nightand found her dead. He said he did not know the time. I went with him so far and he called at Dr Plews. They came soon after and found the body dead, between the two beds in a small room. I saw the clothes as described by the children. The report was that as of late she had been drinking and that he has been a sober man. During the afternoon of yesterday I thought it proper to keep charge o fRoache….
