As a young girl, she remembers her mother, Pauline Low, having several miscarriages. One miscarriage resulted in a hemmorhage that required a blood transfusion. Her father, Josef Zechner, stepped up to provide a transfusion directly from him to his wife. But nothing was known about blood typing at the time. Pauline died almost immediately upon receiving her husband's blood. Libby remembers her father coming home and saying only, "I killed your mother." He blamed himself.

Told by Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Zechner Sewell at the funeral home in Louisville, KY after the death of her older brother, Albert Zechner. March 19, 2009
