  • Story: Adelaide Brand

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Adelaide Brand (extract from The Brands of Overland Corner)</font></p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font> <p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">Adelaide was the seventh child of William and Martha, and was the first girl born at the &ldquo;Corner&rdquo; on October 10th 1874, after William and Martha returned there from Eyre Peninsular.</font></font></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">Adelaide was six years younger than her next older sister, Ada. The next girl to be born after Adelaide, Lucy, died when she was six years old, which left Adelaide as the youngest surviving girl in the family.</font></font></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">Adelaide married Alfred Headland on July 16th 1896, when she was 22, and he was 28. They made their home first at, Renmark and then at Waikerie. Adelaide stayed close to her Overland Corner family, however, and told her children and grandchildren often, about life at the hotel. The years of Adelaide&rsquo;s childhood coincided with the period that her mother ran the Overland Corner hotel building as a boarding house, so Adelaide grew up with fond memories of her whole childhood spent actually living at the hotel, whereas the older children had grown up living in the house and store. She told her grandchildren often, of the pleasant aspect which was present in the courtyard of the hotel, where a little fountain played, and provided coolness on the hot summer days.</font></font></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">Adelaide seems to be the only one of William&rsquo;s family who maintained close contact with her cousins in her Uncle Henry Brand&rsquo;s family. In Renmark, Sunday evening meals each week would be shared with James Murray and Lena and their family, and the children were all great friends. Later, when Hannah had died, and Henry&rsquo;s family was living at Qualco, Richard Brand spoke often, in his diaries, of going over to Waikerie to visit the Headlands. Adelaide seemed to be a centre of warmth and family life for many, and the story has already been told of how she would prepare scones and tea for her brother, Henry, when he came into Waikerie on the &ldquo;Industry&rdquo;. Adelaide lived a full life and died in Waikerie on August 27th 1949, aged 73, Alf had died on October 14th, 8 years earlier, aged also 73. They had a family of one boy and two girls born between 1898 and 1903 in Renmark and another girl born sometime later.</font></font></p>
