It was his father's wish that he be "bred up a scholar." He went to New England in 1638 eleven or twelve years before his family arrived, as a boy of age16and twelve other promising young men who intended to enter the ministry ; His father's will provided for tuition at Cambridge University, the
acknowledged "Puritan College." He probably went there for a period of time. Attended Yale Theological Seminary under Rev. Thomas Hooker and Rev. Samuel Stone (father of Mary Stone, his brother's wife) . 1646 ordained as Pastor of churchat Saybrook until 1660; 1660, he & greater part of congregation migrated & founded Norwich, where he was pastor for 36 yrs; He learned the language of the Indians and went among them, teaching them and winning their friendship. The Indians conveyed to him large tracts of land either in trust or as outright grants. Served as Chaplain in King Philip's War and a missionary to the Mohegans, preaching to them in their own tongue. In 1694, he suffered a paralytic stroke which affed his speech so he could no longer preach. In 1696, he retired; 1702, moved to Lebanon, where the people of Norwitch had given him 120 acres and friendly Indians had given him 5 square miles of land, in accordance with the will of Joshua Uncas, a Christian Mohegan Chief. The land, Called Mr. Fitch's Mile, reminded him of the forested Cedars of Lebanon, hence the name of the new town.

Full Context of Colonial Families in the U.S.
The founder of this family in America was Rev.
