The route involved
traveling by foot through the Territory, now West Virginia, along the Tug
River and back. On the return, food ran out, and it was Winter, so the
men were reduced to boiling the thongs, or tugs made
of buffalo hide, and eating them, which gave the Tug River its name. His father was most
likely James Roberts, although this has not been proven, and his mother’s name is unknown. Cornelius married Mary Benton
about 1767. They lived in Henry County for a few years until about 1769-1770, when he obtained land as a Right-of-Settlement
in Grayson County, Virginia. During Lord Dunmore’s War against the Shawnee Indians in 1774, Cornelius served in the Militia
with the now legendary Daniel Boone, and then in 1780, he fought against the British in the American Revolution in the Militia
of the Elk Creek District. It was around 1783, that he finally settled down for good, in The New Garden Settlement, in what is now Russell County, Virginia. Cornelius and Mary had a total of 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls. In June of 1788, while on an expedition to the Black Mountain to collect the valuable herb, ginseng, Cornelius and his party were attacked by a band of Cherokee Indians led by the infamous Robert Benge. Cornelius was scalped and killed in the attack. Cornelius’ twelth child was born a few months later and was named Mourning in his memory. 25 years later Cornelius’ son, Daniel, and a party of men hunted down and killed Dick Benge, the son of Robert Benge. Cornelius and Mary left a legacy of 117 known grandchildren, and over 660 known great-grandchildren.
Cornelius was 42 years old when he died.

"Texas and Texans," Vol. IV, Published 1797, 1914, Biography of Frank S. The Agency was first located at Southwest Point, then moved to
Hiwassee garrison near Dayton, Rhea County Tennessee. Meigs County which adjoins Rhea County must be named for him.
The letter is a description of what happened by Col. Meigs.

"The" Talley, refers to Jacob Talley. Daniel Roberts, and Jacob Talley were living in Franklin County, Tennessee in 1813.
The Cherokee lands were not far away in Rhea and Meigs Counties. Jeremiah Jeffrey was the father of Cynthia Jeffrey, who
married Abraham Roberts, son of Daniel Roberts. Jeremiah Jeffrey was later a founder/member, of the Bethel Baptist Church in
Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, where Nathan Roberts was the Pastor.

This 1813, record shows that the tradition in the Roberts family is correct, that Daniel Roberts did have an important role
in the killing of Dick Benge. However, it was not Dick Benge who killed Cornelius Roberts. Dick Benge was Robert Benge's
son. Lt. Vincent Hobbs is the one who killed Robert Benge, as is told in the article below.

Source:
Research of Mary K. HARRIS.

The Roberts Family
Descendants of Cornelius and Mary(Polly)Roberts Of Virginia

Most of the information below was found by Roberts researchers Rodney Veitschegger and Mary Kay Harris.
I have verified some of the information but not all of it.

The first reference that has been found of Cornelius Roberts was in the first List of Tithables of Pittsylvania County,
Virginia, in 1767. This was the year Pittsylvania was formed from Halifax County. In the List taken July 17, 1767,
by Peter Copeland, in the Western part of Pittsylvania, is a "Neel Roberts". Roberts researchers have concluded that
he was related to the Roberts of Snow Creek, and that James was likely his father, and possibly John, of Halifax County,
was his grandfather. James was Administrator of the Estate of John of Halifax. Another clue comes from the association
of Cornelius in various Land Records of Virginia, with a William Roberts. This William, and James, and Cornelius, had Land
on Snow Creek. There is a George Roberts, who had a Will in Pittsylvania County, who had a son George, who died in Louisiana
abt. 1810. The son of George, Jr.; Elisha, lived in Green County, Kentucky, on Pitman's Creek, very near Jesse Roberts, the
son of Cornelius, the name Cornelius was used in this family as a given name.

Pittsylvania County, Virginia Entry Record Book: Cornelius Roberts, 400 Acres on a Fork of Ready Fork Creek, called the Grassy Fork,
04 July 1767; 400 Acres on a Branch of Read Creek, called Solomon's Branch. 07 Aug 1767; 400 Acres on Branch of Beaver Creek,
23 Apr 1769; 400 Acres beginning on Crunks line.
23 Apr 1769; And others. John, James, and Cornelius Roberts, are all in the same area. James appears by 1753, which was about
14 years earlier than Records for Cornelius. James was Adm. of John Roberts in 1760. Last record for James Roberts in
area was 1768.

A Mrs. Bowman of Richmond, Virginia, supposedly traced Cornelius Roberts to a James Roberts in New Kent, Virginia:

John Roberts, had: dau Mary, b. 1688, , St. Peter's Parish, Virginia Colony.
James Roberts, had: James, b. 1728, Frances, b. 1726.
John Roberts, had: John, b. 1734, Susanna, b. 1739, Elizabeth, b. 1736

Neel's first son was named James, and it was usual to name the first son after one's grandfather. The year of his birth
is unknown, but since he was married by 1767, and since his first child was born about 1768, he was probably born about
1749. It is probable that Cornelius had brothers named William, Abner, and Isaac--perhaps more.

His marriage to Mary (Polly) Benton, could have been in North Carolina, because many Bentons lived in Orange County,
North Carolina, just across the line, from Pittsylvania County, Virginia. His son, Nathan, named a son Cornelius Benton
Roberts. There is a Will in Granville County, North Carolina, of Sam Benton, witnessed by a Joseph Roberts, 17 Jan 1773.
Sam had sons, Sam and Jesse. [Thomas Hart Benton's, (Cousin to Mary), father was named Jesse Benton, and Thomas Hart
Benton's brothers were Jesse, Jr, Nathaniel, and Samuel, and sisters, Polly, and Susannah.] The idea that Mary's last name
was BENTON is conjecture right now. Clues point to that being her last name but it has not been proven.

Cornelius is listed as a Soldier of Lord Dunmore's War of 1774, a War to protect the Western Settlements. Between 1770
and 1771, he was in Capt. Looney's Company, along with William, David, and Henry Roberts. On 10 Oct 1774, he is listed in the
same Company, along with William, and Henry Roberts. Also Benjamin Roberts, of Capt. Russell's Company, James Roberts, of Capt.
Campbell's Company. This was action against the Indians.

In 1782: He is shown as a Montgomery County, Taxpayer with one poll and no slaves.

Account of the death of Cornelius, in Russell County, Virginia: "and in the month of June 1788, four men were killed in
Russell County, and three men were killed, and scalped on Black Mountain. One of the Elimes, 3 of the Breedings, and
Neal Roberts, from the New Garden Settlements, in Russell County, were found on Black Mountain, killed and scalped." Some of
the Roberts family had a tradition that one or more sons of Neil Roberts went back to Virginia and killed the half-breed
named Benge who killed their father. Black Mountain is on the Kentucky/Virginia Line in Harlan County, Kentucky. The Records
state that Lt. HOBBS, led the Band that finally killed Benge.

In Russell County, Virginia, Court Order Book 1, page 181, 09 Jan 1790, Mary Roberts is granted Administration of the
Estate of Cornelius Roberts, decd.

There is a tradition that the Roberts' were French. Christine R. Lewis said, "Pierre Roberts was our ancestor, this
by word of mouth from my father". "Roberts family in England, came there from France, during the time of William the
Conqueror, migrated from England through Wales, Scotland, and Ireland." Rodney Veitschegger, from whom I got this
information, feels that this is improbable from the research he has done on Rev. Pierre Roberts, of South Carolina.

Proof of Children of Cornelius Roberts, is provided by Russell Cunty, Virginia, Deed Book 8, pg. 234, 05 Oct 1829:

Between Joseph Riddle and Rhoda, his wife, formerly Rhoda Monk, of the State of Tennessee, John Monk, Biddy Smith, formerly
Biddy Monk, Holt Colley and Betsy, his wife, formerly Betsy Monk, Ezekiel Monk, ______ Gibson and Peggy his wife, formerly
Peggy Monk, Polly Monk, and Milly Monk all of Lee County, Virginia, Children and Heirs-at-law of Polly Monk, formerly Polly Roberts,
deceased, Abraham Childers and Elizabeth, his wife, formerly Elizabeth Roberts, of Perry County, Kentucky, James Roberts of
Pike County, Kentucky, Jesse Roberts of Green County, Kentucky, Edward Frost and Milly, his wife, formerly Milly Roberts,
of the State of Tennessee, Nathan Roberts, Daniel Roberts, Peter Anderson and Sina, his wife, formerly Sina Roberts,
Isaac Roberts, Jacob Talley and Mourning, his wife, formerly Mourning Roberts, all of the state of Alabama, Archibald Roberts,
of the state of Indiana, Lot Literal and Susanna, his wife, formerly Susanna Roberts, of the state of Ohio.
Said Polly Roberts, Elizabeth Roberts, James Roberts, Jesse Roberts, Milly Roberts, Nathan Roberts, Daniel Roberts,
Archibald Roberts, Sina Roberts, Susanna Roberts, Isaac Roberts, and Mourning Roberts, being all the Children and Heirs-
at-law of Cornelius Roberts, late of Russell County, Virginia, deceased, of the first part, and Joseph Kizer, of the said
County of Russell, of the second part, Witnesseth; that the said parties of the first part, for and in consideration of the
sum of eleven hundred dollars, to them in hand paid by the said Joseph Kizer, before the sealing and delivery of these
presents, the receipt wherof is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained, and sold, and by these presents do grant,
bargain, and sell, unto the said Joseph Kizer, his Heirs and Assigns, all their interest in sixty acres, more or less, part
of a tract of 260 acres, granted to the said Cornelius Roberts, from this Commonwealth by Patent, bearing date the 03rd day
of June 1788, lying and being in the said County of Russell on the North Side of Clinch River, and bounded as followeth,
to wit: Beginning on the north course to the patent line of said 260 acres, and with the lines thereof to John Kizer's
line to a Cliff of Rocks at the River, and thence up the River with the meanders, thereof, to the Beginning: With the
appurtenances to the same belonging.
