• Story: My Great-Grandma Hanson

Visiting my great-grandma was interesting. I remember she seemed really small in stature and had very long grey hair that she would always wear in a bun. My memories of her house are not very clear but the things that really struck me about her house were her wood burning stove in the kitchen, the flower arch in the back yard and the fact that you had to go upstairs to go to the bathroom! I remember the stairs in her house too -- beautiful wood stairs. I remember a room on the main floor where she sewed or slept, I can't remember for sure which it was. Then, I remember visiting her in the nursing home. She never knew who anyone was and talked in Norwegian a lot, which I couldn't understand. My grandma (Stella Hanson) knew some Norwegian and would speak with her a little. Most of what she would talk about would be in the very distant past. I remember visiting her one time and we took a 4 generation picture -- Great-Grandma Hanson, Grandma Hanson (Stella), my mom (Gail Johnson) and me, my brother (Michael Johnson) and sister (DeAnna Johnson). That was neat.

  • Story: A Stubborn Streak? In Our Family? Never!

As reported by Marian Hanson:

Grandma told me that I could not wear shorts because young ladies would not do that. I told her that I was never coming to her house again until I could wear shorts! So later that year she invited us to Christmas dinner at her house. Well I told her I was not coming to Christmas dinner unless I could wear shorts. Both my dad and my mom tried to change my mind but I wasn't budging! Grandma didn't say anything for a long time and then finally on Christmas morning she called and said that it would be okay if I wore shorts. So I went to Christmas dinner in the middle of December, in Thief River Falls, MN, in shorts. I was going to have my way on that one no matter what!
