  • Story: Rutans, Ogdens, And Huguenot Society

Blaise Rutan was a citizen of St. Mihiel, France 1534. Claud Rutan (son of Blaise) was a merchant. His son Claude (II) was also a merchant and dealer in draperies. Claude (II) [was the] father of 6 children. Judith, Marie, Jean, Daniel, Abraham, and Sarah. Abraham Rutan was born in 1624 and when a young man was forced to flee France with thousands of protestants (Huguenots) when King Louis XIV recalled "the Edict of Nantes." They went to Germany, then Englad and Holland. Then Abraham and his brother Daniel, with many others of the Huguenots came to America. They landed at Boston in 1677 and soon settled at New Platz, NY. Abraham Rutan married Marie Patilion, of Lorraine, France. They had 10 children. Pierre or Peter Rutan was the sone from whom the Ohio Rutans descended. Pierre owned 100 acres of land at Passaic, NY. The only known fact we have of him are that a son Abraham II inherited 1/2 of his father (Abraham) estate. Abraham II had a son John born May 16 1751. John Rutan married Catherine Jones (born Jun 1751). They had 9 children, Daniel & Audria twins born Aug 24, 1779. Daniel Rutan Married Mary Hazel (Aug 13 1771). They had 5 children. She died 1808. Daniel then married Mary Riddle Feb 10, 1810 and they had 11 children. [list of 5 children by Daniel Rutan and Mary Hazel listed here] A lot of French in Ogdens thru Rutans since that part of France where they originated is near German border and as they did live in Germany and German spelling was used some, it was Routyahn. The Huguenot Society of New Paltz, NY, has the family record there and the French spelling is used "Rutemps." They lived there until about 1700 and then went to New Jersey. The Rutan is the American spelling. As I interpreted the word Rutan means "temporary route."
