this is a brief excerpt from the History of St Paul First Lutheran Church that is recorded on their web site:

"Pastor Anders Peter Monten became the leading force behind the establishment of Bethesda Hospital, as the Conference accepted the title and continuation of the work only after Monten had gathered the money and paid for the 10 acres of land near Lake Como. Extension work from our church was begun under Pastor Monten's guidance. Churches were rented on Dayton's Bluff, in West St. Paul and homes were used in the Rice Street and Arlington Hill areas."

According to church records, he was pastor there from 1877 to 1886, when his membership was transferred to Minneapolis. The picture on his profile is a snapshot of a painting that now hangs in the church. It was photographed for us by a church member just yesterday, 7 JAN 2011.

Monten, Mr. O. H. Nelson, of Alexandria, to Miss Laura C. Sorenson, of Carver.

The interesting ceremony noticed above was performed in the Swedish Lutheran Church according to the beautiful and impressive form of that Church, rendered in English, by the wish of the most interested parties. After the wedding a reception was held at the residence of Martin Nelson, Esq., the bride’s uncle, where the happy couple received the congratulations of friends, and a most delicious collation was served. Among the wedding presents were fine silver cake and fruit dishes, an elegant photograph album, and a beautiful cross in wax work, the gift of the bride’s Sabbath-school class. Among the guests were Rev. A. P. Monten, officiating clergyman, Senator Knute Nelson, and Mr. Martinson, of Fergus Falls.

Transcribed from microfilm copy of newspaper at Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, MN.
