• Story: Nebeker Family Notes

Aquilla Nebeker was a druggist or physician living in Philadelphia. Mary Emma Talley was the daughter of William Grubb Talley and Mary A. or Margret Ann Bell Talley. Aquilla was the son of Aquila Nebeker and Mary Allen. This Aquila Sr.was born January 17, 1795 in Newport Delaware. He is buried in Stanton Delaware, and his tombstone shows a death date of August 17th, 1846 "in the 54th year of his age". His son John is buried nearby. He was married to Mary Allen who married Abraham Boys after Aquila died. He was an early Postmaster in Stanton. Aquila Sr. was the son of John Nebeker and Mary Sennix, both of whom lived in Newport Delaware. John was the son of Hans Nebiker and Maria Stillie, and Hans was probably born in Baselland Switzerland, probably in the village of Eptingen.
Aquila Sr. and Mary Allen had at least four children: John A, George , Samuel A, and Aquilla Jr. John A. died November 29, 1844 aged 20 years and 10 days. George was born about June 1836 and was married to a lady named Clara and was a lawyer in Philadelphia and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Samuel A. was born about 1841 and died March 20, 1874 in a railroad accident. He also served in the Civil War. The Nebeker brothers operated the first brewery in Wilmington. Aquilla Jr. had, as you noted, the following children: Mary Boys Nebeker, married Willliam Volkhardt. They had a son Aquilla born November 25 1897 in Chester Pa., a daughter Myrtle, born Oct. 9, 1898, a son William Tally, born on Staten Island, and a daughter Mary, born on Staten Island. Aqullina Nebeker was married to Paul Eno. Emma Talley Nebeker married William Preston Craig. They had a son William Lynam Craig, born July 21, 1890. They lived in Middleton Delaware in 1892. Myrtle L. Nebeker married Eugene Landenberger. They had two daughters, Edna and Mary Emma.

Please let me know if you are interested in any of the other information regarding the family. I have a picture of the grave of Aquila Nebeker Sr. and also a few references to him from the "History of Delaware" by Thomas Scharff. Also, a would appreciate any information you have about the family that you would be willing to share with me.
