Josephina Fien H van Elderen
1923-2005
Died: Lincoln, Placer, California, United States of America

Adriaan was there just after WWII (1946-1949) and when he was off duty he went to the hotel where Frans Jansen lived with his wife Josephina van Elderen.

Frans and Josephina had thier first 3 children while living at the hotel. Wilhelmus, Marinus, and Helena Jansen. My grandmother talked about having servants at the hotel.

There are stories that Frans' family owned the hotel in those days. Have not been able to confirm as of yet.

Rio Jansen This is actually a very sad picture. Opa van Elderen was crushed that the Jansens had gone to America. Rumor has it that he cried his eyes out when he returned from Schiphol the night of September 29 1960 after seeing us off. This picture was taken soon thereafter. I think you can still see the sadness on Opa's face. Sure makes me sad to think about it. (I never wanted to leave!) I can see the sadness in his face. I was so young when we left Holland and don't even remember leaving. In fact, I really don't remember Opa. That's very sad. I think they were probably the grandparents that were truly "grandparents". I often think about how life would be if we never left Holland. I sometimes wish that we never left as well. Love you Rio.

February 1, 2009 at 11:19am ·

Louise Jansen Pastor

I believe in my own way that there was a part of all of us left behind when we left Holland. Eventhough some of us were younger, the love, life and culture was taken away from us and that part of us longs to be able to go back and reclaim w...hat was left behind (a pipe dream I'm sure). I can only imagine for the older ones how painful it was to leave and come to a place where they truly were foreigners in a land that wasn't as welcoming as they were led to believe. I hear you, bro.
Another story mom told me was something Oma had told her about carrying explosives for the underground.

One time Oma was walking with a suitcase of explosives and Nazis where walking toward her coming the other way. They began to herass Oma a bit and Oma pretended to be crazy so they eventually left her alone.
