According to family story, Elisha and Mary Ann were married at her parents house the same day their son, Fred, was born. Mary Ann was a large young woman and was not aware that she was pregnant. She became ill and her father called for the doctor. When the doctor informed them that she was having a child, her father, John Joseph, walked to Elisha's farm, which was adjacent to his, then the minister's home and brought them back to his farm and held the wedding ceremony. Norton County marriage records show they were married on 9 Apr 1925, rather than 23 Apr 1925.

Stephen Courtain can remember his grandfather, Joshua Courtain, refering to a white shotgun to be used for 'shotgun' weddings.

Information from Descendants of Denis Joseph NOIRFALISE
