• Story: Marcos Saturno Post

    Hi everybody,
My name is Marcos Saturno de Menezes and I am originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Like Javier's and Jorge's, my grandfather Andrea Saturno was from Licusati, Provincia di Salerno (we could well be related!).
I have been to Licusati myself a few times as I still had a first cousin there until recently, Lucia.
I also studied in Salerno for a year as a part of a University student exchange program; so I used to see them sometimes as well as other relatives in Battipaglia.
My grandfather left Italy around 1888 and arrived in Rio de Janeiro harbor but settled in the little town of Angustura near Alem Paraiba, in the state of Minas Gerais, where other Italians also settled. He was a leather specialist and made bags, shoes and other leather artifacts.
When he left Italy he was around 23 and already married with two children but only his son Saverio survived; his wife and daugther died in Italy and he said he would never set foot there again.
He remarried my grandmother Rita and they had 10 children in Brazil. My mother Teresa is lucky number 10 and was born when grandpa was 64. (I know what you are thinking but my mother really looks like all other brothers and sisters...)
My uncle Saverio joined my grandfather and his brothers and sisters in Brazil before my mother was born, but he chose not to stay. He went on to live in Venezuela and Pennsylvannia, USA; but eventually returned to Italy where he was already married and had children and apparently never left. Two of his children later on settled in Venezuela, Alessio and Andrea.
Since my mother had mostly sisters the majority of the Saturnos in Brazil have it as their second surname and the name is slowly dying away there unfortunately. We are now less than 40 in Brazil at the most.
I got a print out in a Family Research Centre and it says that Saturno is supposed to be originally from Tuscany (maybe a name given to those who lived near the Spa town of Saturnia, as surnames always reflected where people where from)
In Licusati almost everybody is Saturno or De Luca (or both like me) and the names that seem to be repeated every generation in my family are Antonietta, Lucia, Saverio, Andrea and Rosalia.
I would love to hear from anybody so please feel free to drop a line or post something here for everybody to see.
I may be slow in responding as I travel a lot, but this may be a great tool to find out where people ended up and find some long lost cousins!
My grandfather spent the rest of his life writing to his son in Italy, when he died my uncle kept the news going writing to my elder auntie for more than 40 years and it all stopped when they both died.
Maybe we can keep this communication going, for this people who we never met but are an intrinsic part of ourselves.
We may not descend from kings and queens, but maybe our likes and dislikes, preferences for certain types of food, our eye colour, curly or straight hair comes from the same place...
All the best cugini. Ciao!
