Life Story
  • Story: Making A Home In America

Annunziata Guerra was born in Afragola, Naples, province of Campania, Italy on 25 Mar 1883.  Rafalo Fuscone, born 25 Jul 1872 in Naples.  They met and were married in Italy about 1903.   In 1904 their son Angelo Fuscone was born.  In 1906 their son Antonio Fuscone was born.  In 1909 their plans were all set to immigrate from Italy to the United States.  However, shortly before they were to leave, their younger son, Antonio came down with polio and could not go.  Their plans could not be changed and their money had already be paid, so Annunziata made the painful decision to leave her sick young son behind in the care of her mother.  On 14 Oct 1909 she and her husband and their older son, Angelo arrived in New York City and eventually settled in Chicago, Illinois.   Later, when little Antonio was no longer contagious and was well enough to travel, Annunziata returned to Italy and brought her younger son back with her to America.  By 1910 Annunziata (known as Nancy in the USA) and Rafalo (known as Ralph or Tony) had Joseph, their first child born in America.  In 1912 they had Dominic; in 1914 they had Catherine;  in 1916 they had James; and in 1917 they had Ercole (Harry).  Little Ercole, it is believed, a victim of the great Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918.  Annunziata lost her 2 year old baby in 1919.  A few years later, she also lost her son Antonio in 1926, at ago 20, possibly due to residual problems from polio.  Annunziata and her husband Rafalo lived in a 6-flat building at 1826 W. Erie Street, in an Italian area of Chicago.  They owned and ran a small neighborhood grocery store on the South Side.   Rafalo died in 1951 and Annunziata died in 1952.  Both died in Chicago and are buried together with son Angelo and his wife Carmella, along with young Antonio and little Ercole at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery outside of Chicago, in the suburb of Hillside, Illinois, USA.
