    &nbsp;FAIRHAVEN -- John S. Canto, 86, of Fairhaven, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Clotilde (Victorino) Canto. <br> Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, he immigrated to the United States in 1928 at the age of 14 with his parents, the late Manuel and Fransisca (Mello) Canto. He became a citizen while serving in the Army during the North African Campaign of World War II. <br> He worked for many of the area&#39;s textile mills and retired from the Acushnet Rubber Co. in 1978. <br> He was a member of St. Mary&#39;s Church and a member of Our Lady of the Angels Club. <br> Mr. Canto played guitar and sang. He also enjoyed cooking and his flower and vegetable gardens. <br> Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Rosemary Pauline and her husband, Patrick, of West Wareham and Janice Vinci and her husband, Gerald, of New Bedford; a sister, Linda Sylvia and her husband, William, of New Bedford; four grandchildren, Deborah Campbell of Acushnet, Walter J. Vinci, Stephen G. Vinci, Annemarie Freitas and her husband, Trevor, all of new Bedford; an honorary granddaughter, Lisa Querido of Acushnet; two great-grandsons, Tyler D. Freitas and Austin-John Freitas, both of New Bedford; and several nieces, nephews and godchildren. <br> He was the brother of the late Joseph Canto Sr. and Manuel Canto.
