<font size="2">Joseph and Catherine started two branches thru their two sons John ( via Catherine Wakeman etc.)and Ebenezer ( via Nathan Hawley etc). Re-joining again at Mary Jane Sherwood in the early 1800's.</font>
Joseph Hawley was the son of JOSEPH & KATHERINE (BOOTH) HAWLEY of Parwich, Derby, England. He came to Boston in 1629. His brother, THOMAS HAWLEY (1609 - 1676) was killed in Sudbury, Mass. by Indians.<br><br>He married Catherine Birdseye, daughter of JOHN BIRDSEYE, about 1646.<br><br>Joseph was the first town recorder in Stratford in 1650 & a deputy to the General Court from 1665 to 1687. In May, 1685, he elected Commissioner for Stratford. Capt. Minor and Mr. Hawley were appointed by the court in 1684 to lay out to Governor Treat his grant of land. His name is on the list of Freemen of Stratford on August 7, 1669.<br><br>His homelot (#37) was located on the corner of Main St. & Stratford Ave. which he purchased in 1646 from Richard Mills. He purchased of the Indians a large tract of land in Derby, of which that town allowed him to retain the old Indian planting field, and also another tract which joined it, including Great Hill. <br><br>He made his will in 1689 and died the next year. His will mentions children: Samuel, Joseph, Elizabeth, Ebenezer, Hannah, Ephraim, John & Mary. From his will, "I give to my sonn Samuel Hawley all my lands and buildings in Parwidge in Darbyshere in Old England, to him his heirs and assigns."<br><br>The known children of Joseph & Katherine Hawley:<br><br>Samuel Hawley (1647-1734) m.
