I found references in the British National Archives for both of them 'taking the Queen and the Royal Family' into exile in France and Flanders.

Evidently they used their own monies to support the Queen and the Prince of Wales (Charles?) - which bankrupted the elder Hinton - and almost bankrupt the younger Hinton. It was for this that the younger Sir William Hinton was promised the Governorship of Newfoundland. (What happened? Ha Ha - political promises never change)

William Hinton was captain of the ship Adventurer and his father in law - James Boeve/Boevey was a Solicitor and Merchant of London and Middleburg. It is possible that this ship was 'of the merchant fleet' owned by Boeve.

Hinton sailed between Flanders and England (I found him mentioned in many places including Dover, Cornwall, London and other city/counties), the New World including ports in the Carribean, Virginia, New York, and, of course, Newfoundland where he expected to become Governor - this did not happen.

The Hinton family were 'from' Wiltshire and then London where Sir Thomas Hinton was one of the largest shareholders in the Investment Company, Harvey and Hinton - they evidently funded Jamestown, Virginia. This Sir Thomas was the grandfather of Sir William Hinton, the subject of my research project.

I am not at the point of claiming him as a relative - YET - besides, he wasn't the nicest of men - he tried to swindle his daughter in law (a Popham) out of her inheritance from her father... Great man!

"JAMES BOEVEY of London, Merchant...was of Dutch extraction. His father, one Andrew Boeve of Courtrai in Flanders, was brought to England in 1573 at the age of seven by his parents, (born about 1566?) who, being Huguenots fled from the persecution of the Duke of Alva."

James Boeve was born 1622 in London, he married Susanna van der Wyer(daughter of Andreas van der Weijer of Middelburg) in London (I found the marriage on the IGI - 1 May 1638 at St. Mary at Hill, London) - Susanna died in Middelburg about 1650.

James Boeve was a short term owner of the Forest of Exmoor in Dover - very interesting story here.

His daughter in law, Catharina (Riches) Boeve is featured in the book 'The Perverse Widow' - she was married to James' son, William Boeve. This book gives a lot of family history however, it never mentions any children by James' first wife - and mentions Susanna van der Wyer almost as an afterthought.

James Boeve/Boevey married three times and the books I found on the family often mix up the wives and the children born with each wife - funny. James died in Cheam, Surrey in 1695. The book I found said he is buried in the yard of his home called the Council House.

From other references I found James Boeve and Susan/Susanna had a daughter Elizabeth - who may have been born in Middelburg but I don't know for certain as I haven't found a record. She is not shown elsewhere in records or references except that she 'married Sir William Hinton while in Flanders' - and that may have been Middelburg.

Children born to William Hinton and Elizabeth Boeve may also have been born in Middelburg as William was Captain of the ship Adventurer - one of the fleet of ships sent out by his father in law, James Boeve.

I think I MAY have found the burials of William and Elizabeth (Boeve) Hinton in London - I have been told that most of the old stones from that time period did not survive unless they were inside a church - these are inside.

Anyway, this is part of the Hinton-Boeve project I am now neck deep into - with over 300 pages of reference material - literally neck deep in paper. And yes, I do have a copy of the book by Philip Wharton Dickinson where it is first mentioned that Elizabeth Boeve was the wife of Sir William Hinton (Jr.).

Any help with this Boeve family will be gratefully accepted.

This project takes me right back to the beginning - looking for the parents of my George Hinton who was in Pennsylvania in 1717 and is only found in one book/reference as being the son of Sir Captain William Hinton and his wife, Elizabeth Boeve. I still have not found his birth/christening records so I am not willing to claim them as my ancestors - I haven't yet got to the point of 'adopting' ancestors by insinuation from one reference.
