• Story: AID Society

Marie G. Robertson is part of the Corsner household on a single census report. I didn't think this unusual, since Harry and his wife Addie took in many children. What did strike me as odd is that Marie is listed as a "boarder" on another document. "How can a one-year-old be a boarder?" I asked my mother (She is Harry and Addie's granddaughter).

Apparently the Corsners took in children through the AID Society, which placed children whose parents could not take care of them. Sometimes the children were orphaned. Others were from single-parent households -- the parent had to work all day and couldn't take care of little ones. Foster parents were provided a weekly stipend to cover the costs of children they cared for.

Mother remembers two boys, named Kenneth and Clifford. The children were Catholic. One day, a Priest from the local church came by, and told Addie she had to stop sending the children to public school. The boys needed to go to a Catholic school, much farther away. Addie said the boys would continue to attend public school. However, she'd be more than willing to send them to a different church. Each week, she gave each boy 25 cents for the collection plate (a large sum back then). She was sure another community would be glad to receive the money. The priest didn't bother her again.

Mother said that Addie loved children. She never raised her voice to the kids and had a very quiet way about her. She loved to crochet.

Marie G. Robertson moved to New Jersey and had two daughters, Janice and Doris.
