• Story: Adam Berkhoven & Magdalena Jacobse Verdon

Transcribed from THE MILLER - MOOK FAMILY HISTORY written by Larry & Judy Miller - 2005:

" The first member of the Berkhoven family to immigrate to America at the age of 22 was Adam Brouwer Berkhoven. He came in 1642 to New Amsterdam, New York. Adam, who is said to have been the son of Peter Berkhoven and (unknown), was born January 18, 1620. Katwijk, which is located just a few miles from Mook, Holland where our Mook heritage began, was the area of his birth. The name of Berkhoven is probably his correct name and Brouwer, which in Dutch means "brewer", was no doubt his occupation.

On March 19, 1644, Magdalena Jacobse Verdon became the wife of Adam in New Amsterdam, New York. Magdalena, who was born about 1627 in Amsterdam, Noord, Netherlands/Holland, was the daughter of Jacob Verdon and Maria (Mary) Baddie. It is believed the Verdon family immigrated to America when Magdalena was a small child sometime between 1635 and 1637.

The Berkhoven family were members of the Dutch Reform Church in New Amsterdam, New York. Their names appeared on the Membership List of the church in 1677. The Dutch Reform Church was first established by Dutch settlers in about 1628 in New Amsterdam - now known as New York City. The "Reform Church" originally used this description to separate itself from the "unreformed" Roman Catholic Church. They were Protestants who were "Calvinists in theology and usually Presbyterian in Church organization."

In February of 1647 Adam and Magdalena purchased a house and garden in New Amsterdam in which to raise their family.

According to the Documentary History of New York, Adam took the Oath of Allegiance to the British in Brooklyn, New York in September of 1687 and was declared a resident of Brooklyn. He is shown on the Assessment Rolls for Brooklyn in 1675 and 1683.

His will, which was dated January 22, 1691, left all his property to his wife, Magdalena for her use during her lifetime. Upon her death the remainder was to be divided equally among his fourteen children.

Both Adam, who died at the age of 73 in 1693 in Brooklyn, and Magdalena, who died on August 12, 1698 at the age of 71, are buried in the Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. "

Mr. Bogardu s wrote in his Holiday Season 1997 "Dear 'Cousin'" letter : "Incidentally, for those who have been seeking the correc t parents and ancestry of Adam Brouwer (proof of those alre ady allegedly identified not having been presented)... ther e is a very high probability that Adam was not only from Co logne but also of German rather than Dutch origin.
