• Story: Bezer Family History

In the Pennsylvania records left by the Bezer (Beaser) family it is indicated one of the places the family came from was "Streap", (England or Wales?) Another place refers to their having come from Northern England. At one time The Quaker John Bezer was arrested while in Bristol England. His place of residence when he came to Pennsylvania was "Bishops Canning", Wiltshire, England. Come with me as we explore places on the Internet that may yield some yet undiscovered "Clues" to this family.

Per Beezer Gen. by Hannum in PA St. Lib. -
Variously spelled Beazer, Bezer or Bizer, of Bishops Canning, Wiltshire, Engl., son of Edward and Jean Bezer, of Strett near Marlborough, Wiltshire, Engl., arrived in Pa. with his wife Susanna WITHERS, sister of John Withers, either early in 1682 (according to Smith, Hist. of Del. Co.) or on 12-2-1682, which is the date given in an old BEZER BIBLE. They settled in Chichester (now Marcus Hook), Del. Co. PA. John Bezer died shortly afterward between Sept. 13 and 25, 1684 and Susanna d. before or in 1693. Insert "WILL".)

He was patented 200 acres of land in Concord Twp., Del. Co. He was a member of the Soc. of Friends and was severely persecuted in England for his religious convictions. Before leaving England he was engaged in business as a maltster.

The BEZER FAMILY BIBLE, dated 1551 was in the possession of James Phillips in 1887 whose wife was Eliza Lamplugh, a direct descendant of John and Susanna
(Withers) Beezer. • Story: Edward Bezer

Edward Bezer (c1650-1688) was perhaps the earliest settler of Bethel. He was born in Wiltshire, England, and came to America with his brothers, John and William, who purchased tracts in adjacent Chichester and Concord. Edward purchased 500 acres at the Chelsea end of the township, and his tract may have determined the odd boundaries of the township. He was a leader in the Society of Friends, and the first recorded meeting of the group was held at his log home in 1686. That same year, he was appointed Constable for "Bethel Liberty". He also was a member of the Provinicial Assembly in 1715. The family has long since disappeared from Bethel record, but the "Bezer's Run" is found in maps to this day. (Bethel Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania through Three Centuries)...written by George Walter Goodley, published 1987.
Edward Bezer, who took up 500 acres in the extreme northeast corners of Bethel in a Lease and Release Agreement, must have built a home in the Chelsea area, near or on what is now the Chelsea Tank Farm, the boundaries of his tract apparently determined the boundaries of Bethel with her neighbors of Concord, Aston, and Chichester.

Another indication of the separate entity of Bethel is from the record of the first monthly meeting of the Society of Friends, held at Concord, 1686. The record of that meeting tells us that Meetings of Friends were already being held at "Edward Bezer's in Bethel" and at "Robert Pile's in Bethel".

More About Edward Bezer:
Occupation 1: 1686, Constable, Bethel Township.
Occupation 2: Unknown, Mason/Carpenter.
Religion: Unknown, Quaker.
