Snyder, who since August 2006 resided in Carrollton, Georgia, passed away at her home on Friday, 9 May 2008, after a protracted battle with esophageal cancer. She was 90 years of age.

Born on 27 March 1918 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mrs. Snyder was the eldest of three children in the family of Arie and Elna Donker. After studying at Wheaton College in Illinois, she transferred to Calvin College in Michigan and graduated with a B.A. degree. Both before and after her marriage to Robert C. Snyder in 1973, she taught English and American History at high schools in Alexandria, Va., Mountain Lakes, N.J. and Atlanta, Ga. throughout her 31-year marriage, prior to her husband's premature death in 1974, Mrs. Snyder was an active leader in several Christian communities. After her family moved to Hickley, Ohio, for example, she founded a hugely successful and cross-denominational Bible-study group for women in Medina County. Her faith always ran deep and true to the Christocentric call for healing and reconciliation in a broken world.

Caritas, though, begins at home. Before all else, Mrs. Snyder was a devoted mother and grandmother. Surviving her are children Dr. Robert Lance Snyder of Carrollton, Ga. David F. Snyder of West Caldwell, New Jersey; Suzanne B. Snyder of Chapel Hill and Mark J. A. Snyder of Wellesley Hills, Mass. Mrs. Snyder has ten grandchildren, all of whom revere her memory for the unfailing guidance and unconditional love she offered them.

The Snyder family particularly wishes to thank Drs. Howard Seeman J. Taylor Gordon, Richard Bland and Anthony Dragun of Carrollton, Ga. as well as the staff of Tanner Hospice for their splendid care of our mother/grandmother over the course of the past two years. We also cannot begin to express our gratitude to Ms. Annette Boykin the primary caretaker of "Miss Betty" since 2006 for her wonderful devotion and friendship.

Mrs. Snyder will be interred next to her husband on Saturday, 17 may 2008 in East Hanover, N.J. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Betty D. Snyder Scholarship Fund, c/o M. Snyder, State Street Corp., One Lincoln Street, Boston, Mass. 02206. The fund will help to defray the post-secondary educational expenses of Ms. Boykin's grandchildren.

Martin& Hightower Funeral Home of Carrollton has charge of the Arrangements.
