Obituary for Maurine McCreedy

Maurine F. McCreedy

Maurine F. McCreedy, 81, of Oostburg, passed away quietly in her sleep Monday morning, May 12, 2008.

Born in Poynette on May 29, 1926, daughter of the late Dr. William J. and Anna (Keichingner) Focke, she attended and graduated from Wayland Academy, Carleton College and St. Luke's School of Nursing. As an adult she received a Masters degree in Public Health from Viterbo University.

On May 27, 1951 she married the late Donald McCreedy. The couple resided in Thiensville, where they raised their children before moving to their home near Oostburg in 1972.

Besides being the primary caregiver for her children, Maurine was also home room Mother, PTA co-chair, den mother, Sunday school teacher and a foster mother. She and her husband were founding members of Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Mequon.

Once her children were in school, her nursing career took her to Milwaukees Columbia Hospital, private duty, Port Washingtons St. Alphonse's Hospital, Sheboygan's VNA, and Sheboygan County's Department of Health as a supervisor. After her career ended she volunteered at Sheboygan's St. Nicholas Hospital in the recovery room. During that time she was a partner with her husband in the McCreedy Group, an advertising agency.

Maurine's legacy is much more than her career. She was a loving daughter, a trusted, supportive, loving wife, a good sister, a hard worker, an inspirational mom and a loyal friend. As a daughter, she made her parents proud when she graduated from nurse's school and also when she received her Master's Degree. As a wife she helped make her husband better than he would have been without her. She not only kept a wonderful home, but also she worked side by side with Don at home, at church and at their business throughout their lives. As a mother she raised four children who have each made positive contributions to their communities and who are responsible, polite, respectful, caring individuals, spouses and parents. As a friend she cared for, laughed with, cried with and experienced the joys and pains life has to offer with those she knew. Over more than the last decade she received much joy and comfort from her weekly Mahjong game with several of her best friends.

Perhaps, besides being a spouse, the aspect of life that brought Maurine the most joy was that of being a grandparent. Months before her first grandchild was born, she had a "Happiness is being a Grandparent" license plate attached to her car. It was a role that for the last 24 years "Grandma" or "Nana" believed to be the most important of her life. She held the hearts, health and education of each of her grandchildren in highest regard. She spent countless happy moments visiting with, playing cards with, playing peek-a-boo with, telling stories to and just being with her eight grandchildren and they are each better for it.

She is survived by her children, Stephen (Theresa) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Nicola (Scott) Davis of Sun Prairie, Stuart (Pam) of Telluride, CO, and Bill (Melinda) of Plymouth. She is further survived by eight grandchildren, Jesse, Sam, Wiley, Kelsey, Cailin, Grace, Paul and Jack. She is predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Don; her parents, her sister, Manetta (Dick) Merrill, and her sister-in-law Barb (Karl) Holbrook.

Maurine McCreedy helped make a good place better.
