  • Story: NICHOLAS JOSEPH EHL And CLEMENTINE FLINCKE

    <!--StartFragment--> <p style="margin-bottom: 13pt; line-height: 16pt">Nicholas Ehl Died:<span>&nbsp; </span>Sept. 19, 1903 in Parry Sound, Ontario, Age 38.<span>&nbsp; </span>He was going through a fence with a shot gun and it accidentally discharged and killed him.<span>&nbsp; </span>His son Andrew was with him at the time.</p> <p style="margin-bottom: 13pt; line-height: 16pt">Clementine Flincke: Following the death of Nicholas married Dave Reid in Burks Falls Ontario in 1905.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>They moved to Saskatchewan in 1912.<span>&nbsp; </span>Clementine and Dave Reid had three children. <span>&nbsp;</span>She died in Edmonton, Alberta in 1958 at the age of 84.<span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: tahoma"></span></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 13pt; line-height: 16pt"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: tahoma"><em>&ldquo;Free Land Grants and the Canadian Homestead Act attracted many settlers to Canada, and this included Nicholas Ehl.&nbsp; He left his immediate family in Belgium and immigrated to Canada in 1886 when he was 21 years old.&nbsp; Nicholas sailed from Antwerp, Belgium aboard the Vessel Rhynland and arrived in New York on April 10, 1886. &nbsp;His destination was listed on the ship&#39;s log as Forante. From there he traveled to Ontario, Canada.</em></span></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 13pt; line-height: 16pt"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: tahoma"><em>Every head of a family could receive 200 acres of land, or any person over 18 years of age could receive 100 acres, with extra land given for rocky sections.&nbsp; Nicholas&rsquo; land was in the Parry Sound District of Ontario.&nbsp; He was required to clear 15 acres of land and erect a one-story house &lsquo;fit for habitation&rsquo; with the dimensions of 16 by 20 feet.&nbsp; Settlers had to live on the property, and if all the requirements were met in a number of years they could then apply for a land patent and become the legal owner, which Nicholas did.</em></span></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 13pt; line-height: 16pt"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: tahoma"><em>Clearing the land for cultivation and building a log home was not easy, but neighbors helped neighbors.</em></span></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 13pt; line-height: 16pt"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: tahoma"><em>He married Clementine Flincke on April 29, 1890 in Parry Sound.&nbsp; Nicholas was 25 and Clementine was just 16.&nbsp; Nicholas and Clementine had 5 children: Andrew &ndash; born 1891; Katy &ndash; born 1893; August &ndash; born 1896; Nicholas &ndash; born 1898; and Peter &ndash; born 1901.</em></span></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 13pt; line-height: 16pt"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: tahoma"><em>Nicholas worked very hard to provide for his growing family.<span>&nbsp; </span>As well as farming he fished, trapped and hunted for food.</em></span></p> <!--EndFragment-->
